About the Snapshot
The Learning Snapshot is a short, plain-English read on how your child is thinking like a scientist on a specific project — grounded in the NGSS Science & Engineering Practices and written from their own work, not from a chat transcript.
What It Shows You
- A fit band for this project: right on level, stretch-ready, or still building foundations.
- Up to two specific strengths, each grounded in a verbatim quote from your child's own writing.
- One growth area with a concrete suggestion.
- One suggested next step calibrated to their grade.
- Pro: a per-practice calibration rail showing where they land on each NGSS practice this project touched.
How It's Scored
The Snapshot reads only the text your child authored during the investigation — the hypothesis, procedure notes, journal observations, and conclusion answers. It does not read chat transcripts, tutor hints, or anything the AI generated. Each project is scored against five rubric dimensions drawn from the NGSS Science & Engineering Practices:
- Hypothesis quality (NGSS P1, P6)
- Fair test design (NGSS P3)
- Data analysis (NGSS P4)
- Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (NGSS P7)
- Explaining the work (NGSS P8)
Each dimension has an at-level and a stretch anchor written for grades 3 through 8, paraphrased from the NGSS Practices at that grade band. The anchors decide the fit band and the per-dimension calibration — not a corpus percentile, not a classmate comparison.
What It Deliberately Does Not Do
- No percentiles, rankings, or “ahead / behind” verdicts.
- No “grade level: 4.8” IQ-style numeric scores.
- No comparison against identifiable peers, classes, or schools.
- No scoring of the AI's words — only the kid's own writing counts.
Simulated vs. Real Data Projects
Some projects let kids explore a question with a simulated dataset instead of running a physical experiment. The Snapshot reads those runs too, but it skips the “Fair test design” dimension — there wasn't a real procedure to execute — and the calibration rail reflects that.
When the Snapshot Is Ready
Your child's Snapshot is generated a few seconds after they finish their last step. If you open the Field Report immediately and see a “preparing…” state, pull to refresh in a minute — we only run it once per project and cache the result.
